Prof. Dr. Didem Light has over 20 years experience advising and litigating, particularly in in the areas of international and domestic transportation, international and domestic sales, maritime and insurance law.

Prof. Light started  her career at Kaptanoğlu Shipping, in İstanbul,Turkey. After she obtained her LL.M degree from Marmara University, Social Sciences Institute in 1995,  she joined the Istanbul Bar Association and started practicing law.  She later completed her PhD at Marmara University, Social Sciences Institute. 

Prof. Light is a high ranking arbitrator at the Insurance Arbitration Commission on insurance disputes, and an official expert witness on transportation and shipping issues in the Turkish Republic. 

Prof. Light represents a wide range of corporations and individuals domestically and internationally and has been appointed as an average adjuster and an evaluation expert in the transportation industry.  

Currently, Prof. Light is a full professor in the Department of Law at the University of Commerce in Istanbul, where she has been a faculty member since 2004.  She is a member of the University Senate as well as the Faculty Board and the Faculty Administrative Board.

Prof. Light has written and lectured on legal topics relating primarily to maritime law, transportation law and insurance law. She has contributed articles to several publications and legal briefs. Her published books include: Collision at Sea, Istanbul 2011; York Antwerp Rules 2004 - General Average (with historical developments), Istanbul 2. Ed., 2006; Protection and Indemnity Insurance Under Turkish Maritime Insurance, Istanbul, 2nd Ed., 2006; Maritime and Insurance Law Lecturer Notes, Turkish Maritime Education Foundation, No. K.7/2002, Istanbul 2002; Comparison of the Ship Mortgage Under Turkish and English Law, Istanbul 1996.

Prof. Light was a member of the  Organizing Committee of the Istanbul Colloquium of  Comite Maritime International  (CMI) which took place on June 6-9, 2015, with more than 200  academicians, lawyers and judges attending from all over the world.

Prof. Light was also visiting scholar Professor at Osgoode Law School from May-August 2016.

Prof. Light is currently vice-chairman of the Turkish Maritime Law Association and a member of the board of the Turkish Insurance Law Association.

Prof. Light  is married and has two children.
